My memories are very similar, I was too young and no doubt stupid (ahaha) to really be all that interested in the politics though I remember being impressed that someone was actually called Jack Straw. I just went for the music cos I loved Squeeze then. Jools Holland had indeed just left and they'd recorded 'East Side Story' with Paul Carrack but he wasn't there so they did a couple of songs as a quartet then someone got a piano up and Jools played it, doing 'Mess Around' and another old one. It was fantastic. I was 20 and...I was there, very close to the stage. I was 20 and lived in Manor Park in Lewisham at the time. For the vast majority the politics was a side-issue. I remember Tony Benn speaking but I can't remember the content. Labour were fragmenting (surprise surprise) and the SDP had only just formed so Labour were casting about for some relevance. I remember Alan Boesack being mentioned but I can't remember if he spoke. Squeeze were arguably the bigger draw and it had been on and off for a couple of days as to whether they were appearing. They were certainly the reason my girlfriend and I walked there and back. They hadn't played for a bit and Jools had left by then. Think they did 4 numbers. I don't remember which but I think Gilson Lavis may have broken a piece of kit or something.Richardhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01313387849115278988noreply@blogger.com
