We've mentioned the illustrious history of The Venue in New Cross before. Here's some documentary proof that the place really was a top live venue in the 1990s, before it became more or less exclusively for cover bands. The flyer on the left is from 1994, when bands including The Godfathers, Shed Seven and Revolutionary Dub Warriors played there (I admit to being at the latter). The flyer on the right is, I think, from 1992 and is more impressive with US bands Belly and Sebadoh, the latter supported by TV Personalities and Cornershop. Anyone got any more old flyers?
I've got some old NMEs here - I'll have a look!
ReplyDeleteOnce again, you seem to be blogging my mid-1990s life... I was at that Revolutionary Dub Warriors gig, although, to be honest, I can't remember hardly anything about it, as I was a little worse for wear. Highlights of the venue at that time were a series of On-U nights, around '94/95: Little Annie, African Headcharge, and Gary Clail. (I'm not 100% sure about Clail, might be mixing it up with an AFA benefit in Walthamstow Town Hall.)

It's the nature of the period that my memories too are very vague. Of Revolutionary Dub Warriors very little remains in my brain, but strangely I can distinctly remember going through to the pub like bar at the front of the Venue on this night and dancing to 'Let me be your fantasy' by Baby D. Neil
ReplyDeleteOh, man, I wish I'd been there to see
ReplyDeleteSebadoh in '92. The Venue is still largely wasted, I think. Good news though, Sebadoh, with original circa '92 line-up is re-forming, touring america, hopefully Europe, and possibly recording. Maybe they will return to New X, but it's unlikely.
Maybe we should email Lou & ask. http://www.loobiecore.com
He responds, I've emailed him before.
Love to say I'd seen Suede or Oasis play there, but the best gig I can remember seeing was, err, Credit to the Nation.
ReplyDeleteThink I was at Credit to the Nation too, was it with Chumbawamba
ReplyDeleteHow did I miss this when it was originally posted? I used to collect these, but I might have thrown them out, I'll have a look.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, I think I'm going to cry for a lost Venue...
I saw some great bands there around 1994...Moose, Hair and Skin Trading Company..brilliant times!
ReplyDeleteI have been uploading loads of flyers to this facebook site.

ReplyDeleteComing to this rather late (!), but the wonder @nothingelseon on Twitter is posting scans of old NMEs and Melody Makers, are there are tonnes of old fliers from The Venue contained within: https://twitter.com/search?q=%40nothingelseon%20%22the%20venue%22&src=typed_query
ReplyDeleteSome great lineups in there.. including Radiohead supporting Catherine Wheel, Jonathan Richman (more recently spotted at the Amersham Arms!) and Pulp supporting the Boo Radleys.
