Brockley Video Crisis!
Homeview, the independent dvd/video hire shop in Brockley, is closing in the next couple of weeks. I guess the writing's on the wall for shops like these, with so many people ordering DVDs through web-based rental services, or downloading movies. Still this has been a good place to browse and chat about films, something that is lost online, and Homeview has always had a great selection of obscure art house stuff, foreign language films, classic oldies etc. These are now being sold off in the closing down sale, and the space is due to become a betting shop. Just what we need.
that's a pisser. With the loss of Star Video on Walworth Rd last year, the writing does indeed appear to be on the wall for independent video/dvd rental shops. I never got round to buying that copy of Barry Lyndon.....
ReplyDeleteThanks free market.
Though I left the area a couple of years ago, I have fond memories of this shop. Best video shop I ever visited. Good luck with whatever you do in the future chaps. If you do it as well as you ran your video store, it will be brilliant.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it's not possible to save the video shop, you can help to prevent it becoming a betting shop if you feel that would be bad for the area. More info on Cllr Luxton's blog: http://greenladywell.blogspot.com/2007/02/application-for-betting-shop-on.html

I've always thought that there's a nice synergy between the video shop and Moonbow Jakes coffee shop next door but one (vaguely boho Brockley), I worry about what will happen to Moonbow's if that stretch becomes dominated by a betting shop sucking money out of desparate people's pockets.
