Another Depressing New Cross Story

'A man has been found shot dead in his car in New Cross this morning (Tuesday). The 24 year-old man was found with gunshot wounds in a VW Golf in Ludwick Mews at around 1.30am. He was pronounced dead at 2.11am. Cops believe they know the identity of the man but are awaiting formal identification and they are searching for four male suspects' (South London Press, 28 July 2009).

Don't worry, it probably won't make the BBC News.

  1. The council really need to think about what to do with that area north of Fordham Park, where the murder took place. It's one of the biggest estate areas in South London, rife with gang crime, probably because it's nestled away from any big main roads.

It's one of the only areas in New Cross / Deptford where the council haven't made any necessary regeneration plans and it's clear that the place needs it.

  2. I think you missed the Saturday night shooting:
"The 19-year-old received gunshot wounds in the shooting at the junction of Deptford High Street and Evelyn Street at around 8.30pm on Saturday. "

After all the fuss and noise about neighbourhood policing a couple of years ago Deptford now seems to be an area that the police only drive through on their way to more important ie more middle class areas.

  3. Also, shame on the South London Press for using the word 'cops' in reporting the story. Sloppy, insensitive journalism guys!

  4. The police call themselves 'cops' so why shouldn't journalists? In what way is it insensitive? I'm baffled by that ridiculous comment...

  5. I'm surprised they used cops - it's just unprofessional journalism in what's supposed to be a formal news story not a comment piece.

Bill, I find Deptford quite well policed. I often see Community Support and police officers wandering along, and the police have always responded well and promptly when I've had to contact them. I am at the South end of the High Street though, perhaps the Evelyn Street end different.

  6. I lived in pleasant West Hampstead for several years and regularly saw police on horses doing their patrols of the high street. In the recent 3 months I have lived in New Cross I have never seen a police patrol - I only ever see them driving through.
