The etching 'View at Deptford' was sketched by the artist John Sell Cotman (1788-1842). The contemporary of Turner was born in Norwich and later taught drawing at King's College School in London, with his pupils include Dante Gabriel Rossetti. I wonder where in Deptford this was? The date is also unknown.
The drawing is in the collection at Tate Britain.
it's interesting isn't it - i suppose the only real clue we might have is the ridges in the background on the right hand side.
ReplyDeleteyou could assume we are looking south as there's no sign of the river - and if we were looking north you might expect some sign of habitation - but then again those little steep cliffs are a reminder of some of the outcrops between charlton and the thames, which would mean we are looking north, a tricky one.
Yes a bit of a trackway heading off there too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely picture - I do like Cotman. Somewhere I've got a calendar dating from the early 1980s because it was a series of his water colours.
ReplyDeleteAnd - if I remember rightly - a very tragic figure.
