A new mural was opened this week on New Cross Road to mark the 40th Anniversary of the 1981 New Cross Fire. The piece has been commissioned by Richard Simpson, his wife Sharon and family, joint owners of Cummin Up Caribbean Takeaway(next to New Cross Gate station) as part of their 30 year celebrations.
As the plaque also notes 'This year is also the: 40th anniversary of the death of reggae singer, and emancipationist, Bob Marley. 50th anniversary of Lewisham's first black police officer, David Michael MBE, pictured above. 100th anniversary of the destruction of The Black Wall Street' also known as 'The Tulsa Race Massacre' in the Greenwood district of Tulsa. A memorial to the 14 who died as a result of the fire was installed in nearby Fordham Park in 2012. A plaque at the scene of the fire was unveiled in 2011.
